OTD In 1996: When Azharuddin took Klusener to the cleaners

In the second Test match against South Africa at Eden Gardens, Mohammad Azharuddin equalised with another Indian captain Kapil Dev to clinch the quickest Test century. He took only 74 balls to complete this feast.

The Indian captain smashed this historic hundred in style by hitting Klusener for five consecutive fours. The crowd roared in appreciation with every boundary, and the bowler Klusener could only watch helplessly as the boundaries flowed effortlessly.

Despite Azhar’s blistering batting, the match was won by South Africa by 329 runs. Mohammad Azharuddin fought in the second innings with 52 runs but he became a target of Klusener who was eager to make things even by taking his wicket.

South Africa in their first innings took a lead of 428 runs. South African openers Andrew Hudson and Gary Kirsten had the base with their 146 and 102 respectively. In response, India with the help of Azhar’s excellent 109 and Anil Kumble’s mettle knock of 88 scored 329 runs in their first innings.

In the second innings, South Africa declared their innings by scoring 367 runs and giving a target of 466. India failed to chase this huge target and lost by 329 runs.
