OTD in 1994: Kapil Dev leveled Sir Richard Hadlee’s record of 431 Test wickets

Kapil Dev equalled Sir Richard Hadlee's record of most wickets in Test cricket by taking 431th scalp in Bengaluru.

Indian pacer Kapil Dev achieved a big feat on this day in 1994 when he equaled Sir Richard Hadlee’s world record of 431 Test wickets. He accomplished this milestone in the match against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru.

The match, played in Bangalore, witnessed Kapil’s masterclass in bowling when he dismissed Don Anurasiri, sealing India’s triumph over Sri Lanka.

Kapil, by taking over Richard Hadlee, marked the most wickets in Test cricket history.

In contrast to Hadlee’s 86 Test matches, Kapil’s 129th Test in Bangalore saw him tie Sir Richard’s record of 431 wickets. Compared to Hadlee’s 21,918 deliveries, Kapil took 27,452 deliveries.

“My cricket is dedicated to my father and I will continue to play to fulfill his dream,” Kapil Dev said after the match in the dressing room. “It is very nice to achieve something that any cricketer is looking forward to.”
