OTD in 1988: When Brian Lara embarked on legendary career with first-class debut

On this day in 1988, the Prince of Port Spain Brian Lara made his first-class debut for Trinidad and Tobago against the Leeward Islands

One of the most prolific batters of all time, former West Indies skipper Brian Lara made his first class debut on this day back in 1988. In a career that was studded with milestones, the southpaw amassed over 11,000 Test runs and 10,000 ODI runs.

When Lara made his FC debut on this day in 1988

Lara made his first-class debut for Trinidad and Tobago against Leeward Islands. The 18-year-old debutant did not have a great first outing, managing to score knocks of just 14 and 22 in two innings. Lara was dismissed on both occasions by Elquemedo Willett.

However, it was the very next game that Lara found his touch as he hammered a 95-run knock against Barbados. The southpaw was against the lethal and best Windies pace attack of that time, featuring the likes of Malcom Marshal and Joel Garner. Another interesting aspect of the game was that none of Lara’s teammates manage to score more than 50 runs while he was the lone fighter.
