Former India head coach Ravi Shastri, an enigmatic player back in the days, created a record on this day in 1985, a feat that lasted for almost three decades. Shastri smashed the fastest first-class double century for Bombay against Baroda in a Ranji Trophy Zonal match on January 10, 1985.

Coming in to bat at number 6, Shastri took just 113 minutes to reach the 200-run mark. He remained unbeaten on scoring the double ton, with Mumbai declaring their 2nd innings after having reached 457 runs. In the course of his innings, he became the second batter after Gay Sobers to smother a bowler for six sixes in an over – the victim being Tilak Raj.
