Shreyas Iyer hopes of making a comeback to the Indian Test team is all but over. At least for now. The Mumbai batter failed to impress in the recently concluded Duleep Trophy. To make matters worse, Iyer is not even in the scheme of things for the selectors – not for the Tests agains New Zealand, surely not for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia in November. With that being said, Shreyas has a long way to go before he can reclaim his spot in the Test side, and will join the long list of individuals who are waiting for an opportunity.
Shreyas Iyer’s Test comeback highly doubtful
To say that Shreyas Iyer‘s dreams of making a comeback in the longest format of the game is an understatement. The swashbuckling white-ball batter decided to get things in line by taking part in domestic tourneys after skipping the Ranji season earlier this year. Well, that was indeed when things started to go south for Iyer, starting with the snub from the BCCI Central Contracts list.
Like most cricketers in India at present, Shreyas too wants to be a regular red-ball format player. However, a string of poor performances in his very first opportunity to redeem himself – the Duleep Trophy – has not made his life easy. Shreyas managed to score two half-centuries, two ducks and another 50 runs combined in the tournament. His shot selection was pathetic, as pointed out by a BCCI official who also had categorically stated that there was no room for Iyer in the Indian Test team at the moment. Adding fuel to the fire was Iyer’s India D finishing at the bottom of the standings in the Duleep Trophy.

With one lifeline exhausted, Shreyas Iyer will now embark on a fresh journey in an attempt to make his far-fetched Test comeback. Two more chances remain for the batter – the Ranji Trophy and the Irani Cup. Iyer has been included in Mumbai’s squad for the Irani Cup tie against Rest of India (ROI) which will begin from October 1 in Lucknow. Should he falter in that game once again, he is left with one last option to prove his mettle in the Ranji Trophy season that starts soon after the Irani Cup. It is imperative that Shreyas perform well in these two tournaments in order to stand a chance to make a comeback to the Test side, at least by next year.
