It was a day where nothing went right for Mumbai Indians. Not only their chances were marred by ordinary selection of playing XI, but also some poor bowling and batting by the team. Eventually the side lost their second match on the trot in IPL 2025, this time against GT in Ahmedabad by 36 runs. That also marked Mumbai’s fourth defeat on the trot against GT at this venue, in as many matches.
MI Can’t Beat GT in Ahmedabad
Even before the match got underway, the team committed a folly in leaving out the star from last match, Vignesh Puthur, and instead going with Mujeeb ur Rahman. The Afghani spinner returned with figures of 1/28 in only two overs, at an economy of 14.
The MI pacers, except for Hardik Pandya, let Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan settle down well, who reached 66/0 in the powerplay, and then continued their partnership further. Pandya, on his comeback match for MI, even with his stupendous effort in the field, and with the ball could not avoid a big total by GT. He bagged 2/29 in his 4 overs, but lack of support from other bowlers, meant, Shubman Gill’s team scored 196/8.
Hardik Pandya Fails to Take Side to Win
Sudharsan continued his rich vein of form in the league, and slammed his second successive fifty this season (63 from 41), and stood like a rock at the wicket. Gill ended with 38 while Jos Buttler scored 39 from 24. That meant Satyanarayana Raju finished with poor figures of 1/40 in three overs, Trent Boult 1/34 and Deepak Chahar 1/39. In a surprising move, Mitchell Santner (0/25) wasn’t allowed to complete full quota of overs.
Sai Sudharsan All the Way
Come the chase, once again Rohit Sharma failed as he was castled with a ripper from Mohammed Siraj. Credit to the bowler to come out good from a previous bad performance, and get Ryan Rickelton next, to oust MI from the match. Post that, Tilak Varma (39 from 36) and Suryakumar Yadav (48 from 28) did try to make a comeback, but then the run-rate was a big issue.
Bowling all-around was great for GT. Siraj bagged 2/34, Ishant Sharma had quiet two overs with 0/17, and Prasidh Krishna was the most impressive with 2/18. R Sai Kishore too gave it his best with 1/37 in his four overs.
