Oman & Hong Kong to play alongside giants India-Pakistan in T20 Asia Cup 2025

The 2025 T20 edition of the Asia Cup will see eight teams in action, instead of the originally planed six sides.

The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has decided to increase the number of teams that’ll participate in the Asia Cup 2025. The upcoming edition of the multi-team Asian cricket competition will be held in the T20 format. In the last sixteen editions of the tournament, just two have been held in the shortest format.

Oman & Hong Kong to play in Asia Cup 2025

The first time it was held (2016), it had five teams. The next time around (2022), that number was increased to six. According to Cricbuzz, the ACC has added Oman and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the mix for the 2025 edition. Therefore, the preparatory tournament for the 2026 T20 World Cup will see eight teams in action.

  • India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, UAE, Oman, and Hong Kong

The UAE had qualified for the 2025 Asia Cup after winning the 2024 ACC Men’s Premier Cup. The reason why Oman has made it as well is because they lost in the final of the Men’s Premier Cup to UAE. Hong Kong beat Nepal in the third-place playoff match, and that’s why they’ll be the eighth team.

Asia Cup 2025 moved out of India

The Asia Cup 2025 is expected to be played in September. And the hosting rights will remain with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), but the venue won’t be India. This comes after the BCCI and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have entered a deal by which they won’t play each other at ICC events at either of their homes until 2029.

For the next five years, all of the India vs. Pakistan matches will be played in neutral venues. Right now, Sri Lanka and the UAE are favourites to host the Asia Cup 2025.
