ODI World Cup 2023 then, Champions Trophy now: How Afghanistan outfoxed England

Afghanistan have now beaten England in two consecutive ODIs at ICC events and their game-changers have certainly changed from 2023 to 2025

Afghanistan have done it once again! For the second time in a row, Shahidi and co. have beaten England in an ICC event. Jos Buttler and co. were handed an embarrassing 8-run defeat in their Champions Trophy group stage fixture against AFG, the second time within two years that they have gone down to the country. With this win, Afghanistan have been knocked out ENG from the tournament.

The tale of two England defeats by Afghanistan

History repeated itself once again at the Gaddafi stadium in Lahore where Afghanistan took down England, just like they did at the Arun Jaitley stadium in Delhi in 2023. A lot has changed for AFG since that win in 2023 in terms of the match-winners for the side. Nevertheless, once again, contributions came in from all quarters, (both bat and ball) helping the so-called minnows slay the so-called giants England yet again.

The 69-run defeat in ODI World Cup 2023

In 2023, Afghanistan clinched a clinical 69-run win against Jos Buttler and co in Delhi. Rahmanullah Gurbaz top-scored for the side with a 80-run knock. Ibrahim Akhil, who came in to bat at number 6, scored a whirlwind 58-run knock. With Rashid Khan (23) and Mujeed ur Rahman (28) firing towards the end, Afghanistan were powered to a 284-run total at the end of their innings.

In response, England were bowled out for just 215 runs. Mujeeb and Rashid finished with three wickets each while Nabi bagged two. The remainder of the wickets were split between Fazalhaq Farooqi and Naveen-ul-Haq. Mujeeb was named the Player of the Match (POTM) for his all-round show in the game, especially with the ball.

As for England, Harry Brook (66) was the only batter who managed to taste success on that given day. Adil Rashid finished with a three-wicket haul while pacer Mark Wood had two to his name.

8-run win that knocked England out of Champions Trophy

Cut to ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Afghanistan once again handed a defeat to England, this time to knock them out of the tournament. In terms of performers, those who fared well in their previous encounter in the World Cup in 2023 were rather silent or missing from this encounter.

While Gurbaz failed to fire at the top, it was his opening partner Ibrahim Zadaran who top-scored with a valiant 177-run knock. He became the first Afghan batter to score a ton in a Champions Trophy. A lower-order blitz from captain Shahidi (40), Omerzal (41) and Nabi (40) powered AFG to a mammoth 325-run total. A total that was certainly better than the one they amassed in 2023 against ENG.

Like the batters, the bowlers who were game-changers were also completely different for Afghanistan. It was Omerzai who stepped up on this occasion. He finished with a five-wicket haul that saw the England batting-order being rattled. Rashid settled for just one wicket this time while Mujeeb did not play in the match. Nabi managed to get two. Farooqi got the same one wicket that he did so the last time the two sides met in an ODI.
