Young Sri Lankan speedster Matheesha Pathirana has found himself atop an unwanted record. The pacer, also known as ‘Baby Malinga’ due to his slingy action, similar to that of Lasith Malinga, has earned himself a record that no one wants to have. After bowling 18 wides in the PAK vs SL encounter in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, Pathirana’s name flashed on top of the list of players with the most wides since his debut in June.
Bowler | Team | Wides |
---|---|---|
Matheesha Pathirana | Sri Lanka | 71 |
Alzarri Joseph | West Indies | 22 |
Mujeeb Ur Rahman | Afghanistan | 21 |
Fazalhaq Farooqui | Afghanistan | 21 |
Shaheen Afridi | Pakistan | 21 |
Out of the 26 extras (25 wides and 1 no ball) conceded by Sri Lanka in Pakistan’s record ODI World Cup chase, Matheesha Pathirana gave away 69% (18 wides) of extras alone.
The right-arm pacer has played two matches in which he has conceded 185 runs in 19 overs while picking up two wickets. Currently, the bowler has an average of 92.50, a strike rate of 57, and an economy of 9.73.
