Tim David’s whirlwind knock of 64 off just 28 balls in the first T20I against South Africa yesterday has earned him a call-up to ODI squad for the SA tour. David, who has not played any List A game for nearly two years, is now within a touching distance to make ODI World Cup debut.
With inclusion in the ODI team, David has followed the footsteps of his MI teammate Tilak Varma, who was called for the Asia Cup squad on the back of a terrific T20 debut series against West Indies. The Singapore-born Australia all-rounder could get to make ODI debut against South Africa as Australia’s first-choice players players Glenn Maxwell and Steve Smith are nursing injuries.
“Tim is already here for the T20 series, which offers an opportunity to see how his game can translate to the one-day format,” said selector Tony Dodemaide said as reported by Cricbuzz. “He will provide an extra option for us in that power role at the back end of an innings.”

Mitchell Marsh places bet on Australia’s finisher Tim David to do well in ODIs
For the uninitiated, David has played 26 T20Is for Australia, scoring over 700. The highlight of the Australian’s career so far has been his strike rate. He scores runs at 162. Coming in as a finisher, the 26-year-old has finished a lot of games for Australia as well as in T20 leagues across the globe. Skipper Mitchell Marsh has hailed David’s call-up to the ODI side as a great addition.
“The great thing about Tim is he’s very level-headed. He knows his role in T20 cricket can be inconsistent. But his ability to win us matches is why he’s in this team, and we’ve got full faith in that.
“I want him to play however he wants to play every game, and I know that if he does that, he’ll win us games. He’s an outstanding asset for Australian cricket.”
To note Australia, have announced a preliminary 18-member squad for the World Cup. David is not on the list. But a breakthrough performance in the ODI series against South Africa might just earn him a ticket to the World Cup squad.
