Stepping in to bat No.4, when New Zealand were reeling at 15/3, Phillips took charge of the innings and remained unperturbed by the early blows. He saved the sinking New Zealand ship with a fourth-wicket stand of 84 runs with Daryl Mitchell (22) to his side to 99/4 before the latter lost his wicket in the 15th over.
He, later, continued to show aggressive intent in the innings to notch up 104 runs off 64 deliveries before falling prey to Sri Lanka medium pacer Lahiru Kumara with a mis-timed shot. His heroic knock was laced with 10 boundaries and four sixes as he scored most of the runs for his side.

“Team is really happy with that, special night for GP, got to take my hat off for that. It was a challenging start for us, we were trying to build a partnership after getting to the 10 over mark and then build from there on a tricky surface. The surface is a bit variable (in terms of bounce) out there, which is good to see. Think we should be able to defend this,” Daryl Mitchell said in the mid-game interview.
