New Zealand suffered a horrific collapse at the hands of an inexperienced South Africa on Day 2 of NZ vs SA 2nd Test. Resuming batting on Day 2, the hosts barely managed to hold fort until the end of the first session. At stumps on Day 2, New Zealand were bowled out for 211 runs, trailing South Africa by 31 runs.
NZ vs SA: Proteas steamroll through Kiwis on Day 2
Tom Latham and skipper Kane Williamson resumed batting for the hosts as play commenced on Day 2. Opener Latham (40) was the first to depart, the first of Piedt’s five victims. Skipper Williamson (43) soon followed his teammate, with Piedt striking again four overs later.
The departure of the two set batsmen spelt doom for the hosts as they collapsed like a pack of cards. Rachin Ravindra (29) was clean bowled by Tshepo Moreki, bringing an end to a patient 73-ball knock.
Tom Blundell was the next to depart, courtesy of Dane Paterson. Piedt struck twice again to remove Will Young and Glenn Philips as the Kiwis reeled under the frequent loss of wickets. Paterson struck once more to reduce the Kiwis to 8 wickets down. A confusion between the wickets led to Matt Henry’s departure, thanks to a sharp run out from Zubayr.
Piedt’s fifth and final victim was Neil Wagner as he was stumped. He finished the innings with figures of 5-89.
Earlier in the day, South Africa were bowled out for 242 runs. Debutant William O’Rourke and Tim Southee struck twice to send the visitors packing. Rourke is on a hat-trick after getting rid of the final two Proteas batters in his last two deliveries.
