Stuart Broad missed the 3-0 series win in Pakistan in December following the birth of his daughter. But now he is ready to make a come-back against NewZealand. Broad will accompany fellow quicks, James Anderson and Ollie Robinson, with Jack Leach offering the spin option. Outwardly, the bowling pack has been less than complimentary about the pink Kookaburra that will be used, which moves a little less and feels a little harder.

Stuart Broad Test Stats:

  • Broad has played 159 Test matches.
  • Scalped 566 wickets and has an economy rate of 2.94
  • His best bowling figure in an inning is 8/15
  • Best bowling figure in a match is 11/121
  • He has taken five-wicket hauls 19 times and 10 wickets 3 times.

Skipper and all-rounder Ben Stokes, who will lead England in the country of his birth for the first time, will be the fourth seam option. Stokes did not take part in last week’s warm-up match in Hamilton and did not bowl at training on Tuesday. However, he confirms his and Stuart Broad’s availability to play a full part in the match.

Despite a national state of emergency in New Zealand caused by Cyclone Gabrielle, the first match of the series is expected to begin on time. The Bay Oval wicket has remained covered for much of the build-up, something that normally favours the side bowling first.

The last time both teams clashed in a Test match was way back in the summer of 2022. Team England under the captaincy of Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum defeated NewZealand by 3-0. This set off a run of nine victories in a row.
