Retired Wagner could play in second Test, skipper Southee doesn’t rule out possibility

NZ vs AUS: Neil Wagner had ended his career after playing 64 Tests for the country, and picked up 260 wickets at an average of 27.57.

It was only last week that veteran New Zealand fast bowler Neil Wagner had announced his retirement, but after the Kiwis’ loss in the first Test against Australia in Wellington, the latter could just be back again. The New Zealand skipper Tim Southee hasn’t ruled out the possibility of the same.

Wagner, who was informed, won’t be picked for the first Test, retired before the series. But now, with William O’Rourke suffering a hamstring injury, Wagner might get his due. The youngster O’Rourke went off the field during Australia’s second innings, and didn’t bowl any further in the match.

Wagner did walk out as a substitute for the injured player. “We haven’t had a lot of discussions as yet,” Southee said after New Zealand’s loss. “We’ll see how Will scrubs up. The physio hasn’t sort of put a timeframe on it or how bad it is. We’ll just wait and see how Will goes over the next couple of days. I’m sure there’ll be an update in the next 24 hours.”

“We obviously have to go on and make a decision on who comes in and what role we sort of see that playing out in Christchurch. [Wagner’s] had a great reception here over the last week where he got a couple of moments on the field and obviously he’s been a fan favourite for a long time.”
