Not Yashasvi or Shubman, Why Virat Kohli can open for India in ICC T20 World Cup?

RCB vs KKR: Virat Kohli hammers consecutive fifties in IPL 2024, raises questions if he should open for India in T20 World Cup

Not Yashasvi Jaiswal or Shubman Gill. The most pertinent question now is – should Virat Kohli open for India alongside Rohit Sharma in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup? The ace batter has gone on to slam consecutive fifties in IPL 2024, the latest coming in the RCB vs KKR clash.

Playing only his third game of the tournament, Kohli has been a Man on a Mission. He was decent in the opening game against CSK. But then against PBKS and now KKR, he has showcased his class for the nth time. And most importantly, it raises a question as to whether he should open for India in USA?

India currently has 3 openers in their mixes. Rohit Sharma, the skipper is the natural choice to open for India. Yashasvi Jaiswal is tipped to partner Rohit while Shubman Gill might have to sit out or slot down the order. Virat Kohli’s natural position is batting at 3.

However, given how he is performing in IPL 2024 and just ahead of the T20 World Cup, it is worth considering that he can form a good opening partner with the Hitman. Furthermore, it can be extremely intimidating for the opposition when they see two of the best batters coming out to bat together at the same time.
