Former head coach Rahul Dravid spilled the beans on the lowest point of his career and revealed that it was during India’s tour to South Africa in 2021. The series, which was Virat Kohli’s final one as India captain, saw the Men in Blue lose two Tests on the trot to hand the Proteas a 2-1 series win.
Dravid recalled that despite being able to match South Africa without the services of senior players, India failed to get across the line and that it was the lowest point of his career.
Dravid reveals lowest point in career as coach
Dravid pointed out that India missed the services of senior players in the series, including Rohit Sharma who was injured. The former head coach admitted that the side put up a stiff fight against the Proteas but could not manage to win the series.
“If you ask me what is the lowest point, I would say that the South Africa Test series early on in my career. We won the first Test match in South Africa in Centurion, and then we were playing in the second and third Test match. We have never won a series in South Africa, as you know. It was a really big opportunity for us to win that series. Some of our senior players were not there,” Dravid said on Star Sports.
Dravid’s road to T20 World Cup glory
After 2015, Dravid was associated with the BCCI, having been the head coach for India’s U-19 and India A teams. He then become the director at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) before becoming the new head coach for India in 2021.
Initially slated to step down after India’s loss in the 2023 ODI World Cup final, Dravid was persuaded by Rohit Sharma to remain on board for the T20 World Cup. This decision proved to be a winning one, solidifying Dravid’s place as a coach who prioritizes the team’s success above all else.
