India cricket team spinner Varun Chakravarthy is happy playing ODIs and T20Is, and does not want to venture into Tests. The mystery spinner turned out to be India’s trump card in the Champions Trophy, finishing the tournament as the joint second highest wicket-taker with 9 scalps to his name. While he was primarily a T20 bowler, he made his way into the 50-over format in the England series.
Varun content with T20Is & ODIs, has no Test ambitions
In a video on Gobinath’s YouTube channel, Chakravarthy explained why he wasn’t suited for Tests. He pointed out that a bowler needed to bowl 20-30 overs in Tests, he could only bowl 10-15 overs because of his express pace. Varun categorically stated that he was focusing only on ODIs and T20Is at the moment.
“I do (have an interest in Test cricket), but my bowling style doesn’t suit Test cricket. Mine is almost like medium pace. In Test cricket, you’ve to continuously bowl 20-30 overs. I can’t do that in my bowling,” Varun said.

“Since I bowl quick, the maximum I can bowl is 10-15 overs which is not suited for red ball. I am focusing on 20 overs and 50 overs white ball cricket for now,” he added.
For the unversed, Varun was a pacer initially before he turned to spin. When asked whether he had any regret in doing so, the Tamil Nadu spinner promptly said that he had none whatsoever. In fact, he reckoned that he would have been stuck if he had continued as a pacer.
“I would’ve been stuck there had I bowled pace. There are so many pacers. Also, it doesn’t swing in Tamil Nadu wickets. They are spin-friendly wickets. So you can’t see many fast bowlers from Tamil Nadu. It is very rare,” Varun said.
