India cricket team pacer Mohammed Shami’s comeback to international cricket was delayed due to the bowler being unable to find his rhythm. The bowler, who returned to international cricket after spending 14 months on the sidelines, was out of action due to an ankle injury that also saw him go under the knife. While he was expected to be picked for IND vs AUS Test series, Shami was left out, with captain Rohit Sharma explaining that he wasn’t fully fit. Now, a report has shed light on why his comeback was delayed and eventually took place in IND vs ENG T20I series.
Shami’s comeback was extended due to rhythm issues
As per The Indian Express, a source pointed out that Shami was a rhythmic bowler who wouldn’t be at his best even if one element was not in place. The source explained that one of the reasons why his comeback took longer was because of the delay in his ability to find rhythm.
“Shami is a rhythm bowler. From his run-up to load-up and follow-through, everything is rhythmic. Even if one of the elements is not in place, he wouldn’t be at his best. One of the reasons why his comeback took longer than expected was that he had to find that rhythm back. And he was going to get it only if he bowled a lot of overs,” the source said.

The source revealed that they did not want to dent Shami’s confidence by allowing batters to hit him all around the park. The source pointed out that they could see the pacer struglging in domestic games as well. While it did get to Shami’s head, the veteran also understood that he couldn’t get back his rhythm overnight.
“The last thing we wanted for him was being hit around by batsmen as it would dent his confidence massively. Since he didn’t have the rhythm, we could see him struggle even in domestic cricket. It was hurting him as well, but he quickly got the message that he wasn’t going to get the rhythm overnight,” the source added.
