‘Not like franchise model’: Gambhir warned about managing superstars ahead of Ro-Ko reunion

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kolhi have joined the Indian side and will play their first series under Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach

After playing as teammates alongside Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Gautam Gambhir is all set to begin his journey with the duo as a coach. The veterans have arrived in Sri Lanka for the three-match ODI series that commences from August 2. Ahead of the reunion of the legends, a source via ESPNCricinfo fired a warning to Gambhir over handling the dressing room that is going to be filled with superstars.

Gambhir cautioned ahead of first assignment with Ro-Ko

As per ESPNCricinfo, the source claimed that Gambhir’s biggest challenge would be dealing with the players. The new head coach was warned that coaching the Indian national side was unlike the franchise model where one could tell the players what to do with authority. The source went on to claim that even former coach Rahul Dravid might have found it hard to adjust initially.

It is not an easy task. It is not like a franchise model, where you are the boss and you can dictate terms. That won’t work here. In the India dressing room you will have to pick up the phone, speak to players, and Dravid was really good at doing that,” the source told ESPNCricinfo.

Fresh start awaits Rohit, Kohli

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli ended their vacations early, acknowledging Gambhir’s request. The veteran duo had announced their retirement from T20Is following India’s T20 World Cup win. The ODI series against Sri Lanka will mark the start of the journey for Ro-Ko win the new coach.
