"Not Champions Trophy…": Aakash Chopra fires "transition" warning for Gambhir's future as coach

Aakash Chopra believes that Gautam Gambhir's performance would be reviews by the BCCI after India tour of England

Not just the senior players of the India Cricket Team, but head coach Gautam Gambhir’s performances too have been under the scanner. Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has suggested that the BCCI would review Gambhir’s performance after the India tour of England series. He also suggested that the board can look for another option, should India fail to win the ICC Champions Trophy.

After poor performances in the Border Gavaskar Trophy and the home Test series against the Kiwis before, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli & Mohammed Siraj’s performances have been under the scanner. While the ace batters failed to score runs, Siraj too has been thoroughly inconsistent.

Gambhir’s fate to be decided after England Tour?

“I feel one more England tour. I don’t think the BCCI will say anything to him until then. After the England tour, it will be a year since he took over the reins. You were supposed to ensure transition within one year. So how he did there, which players he prepared, and whether the team’s performances have improved, a review can be done for him,” Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

The team is now determined to undergo a massive transition as reports indicate that both Rohit and Kohli are forced to quit from the red ball format. But that essentially, doesn’t mean head coach Gautam Gambhir is scot-free. The BCCI won’t however take a hasty call on Gambhir.

Aakash Chopra believes that Gambhir’s future will be decided by India’s fate in the ICC Champions Trophy. Gambhir took over the reins of the team after Rahul Dravid ended his tenure. Dravid helped India win the ICC T20 World Cup at Barbados and now the onus is on Gambhir to deliver in the upcoming ICC event.

“However, at least one year at the job is absolutely important to review someone’s performance. You need 12 months. So I feel not the Champions Trophy, but the England tour. That might just be a critical barometer or parameter based on which Gautam Gambhir’s performance might be reviewed. It won’t be a bad thing. You review the performances of batters and bowlers, so do it for the coach as well,” Chopra concluded.
