A win at last for BCCI Honorary Secretary Jay Shah. The administrator had gotten a lot of flack during the ODI World Cup 2023 in October–November for various reasons, but his hard work has finally gotten some fruition. Shah was felicitated with the Sports Business Leader of the Year Award by the Confederation of Indian Industry for his efforts to take the sport to a new level.
“His leadership has left an indelible mark on Cricket worldwide— spearheading the ICC Men’s World Cup to new heights, championing inclusivity with significant strides in pay parity and the creation of the Women’s Premier League, steering the inclusion of Cricket at the Olympics, and many more groundbreaking initiatives that have changed the game forever!” BCCI posted on ‘X’ while praising their Secretary.
Successful 2023 for Jay Shah
Before joining the BCCI in 2019, Shah had successfully run the Gujarat Cricket Association from 2013 to 2019. The administrator has brought the same success to BCCI as he did to the GCA.
Prior to this year, he had played a big role in establishing the biggest cricket stadium in the world, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
However, his first major accomplishment was creating the Women’s Premier League (WPL). The first season of the league was successful and paved the way for pay parity in Indian cricket. With the WPL 2024 auction taking place soon, the league is already bigger and better than it was six months ago.
Jay Shah was also elected as the President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and organised the successful 2023 Asia Cup, which the India Cricket Team won.
Under his and Roger Binny’s leadership, BCCI became the first board to organise the ODI World Cup on its own. The event shattered the all-time attendance record as 1.25 million people attended the event from October 5 to November 19.
