No solution yet as franchises remain at loggerheads over retention at IPL 2025 mega auction

IPL 2025 Mega Auction: BCCI initiates process of retention but franchisee teams fail to come into mutual understanding over retention policy

The IPL 2025 Mega Auction will be held later in the year. And ahead of the grand auction, the BCCI has initiated the process of finalizing the retention policy for the auction. But the problem is the franchisees continue to be at loggerheads at each other. It can be expected that a final call will be taken when the BCCI meets with all the owners in the upcoming meeting.

As per the latest reports, every franchisee has their own demands regarding the retention rule. While some wholeheartedly favour it while other don’t. Majority of the teams have requested for retention of 5-7 players, while a franchisee went on to request retention of 8 players. On the flip side, there are franchisees that don’t want to retain a single player.

3 years back during the IPL 2022 mega auction, the BCCI formulised that no more than 4 players can be retained. These included a maximum retention of 3 Indian players or 2 overseas players.

Franchisees continue to be at loggerheads

Currently, there is no solution yet with the BCCI. However, the only positive being that the apex body has initiated the process of the retention. Since the franchisees are yet to meet and discuss and reach a common ground, the issue is far from being resolved.

IPL 2025 will be a mega auction where every team will be eyeing increase their strength. On the flip side, the teams that have heavily invested on some of the players will be unwilling to place them in the auction. However, the opinion of the majority of the franchisees is to be followed, then the BCCI can allow 5-7 player retentions.

Right To Match

Some of the teams have also asked the BCCI to reintroduce the Right To Match (RTM) option for the upcoming auction. The RTM wasn’t a part of the 2022 auction, but can be introduced for this year. The BCCI is yet to shed any light on the matter. It is expected that more details will be disclosed after the owner’s meet with the BCCI.
