As soon as it became clear that David Warner was going to appear in his last Test series, automatically questions started to be raised about the former skipper Steve Smith, and whether he too was contemplating retirement. But Smith’s manager Warren Craig has put all speculations to rest by saying that the legendary batsman is not retiring any time soon.
Smith, according to Craig has unfinished business, and wants to achieve a lot more before hanging his boots. “I can debunk that (retirement) at this point in time. He’s still talking about things he wants to achieve.” Smith’s manager Warren Craig said to the Sydney Morning Herald.
Smith is for now nearing 10,000 runs in Tests, and upon reaching the milestone, he would only be the fourth Aussie to do so. Not only that, he could be in line to represent Australia in the T20 World Cup 2024.
Steve Smith’s Superior Record in Tests
Smith is arguably the best Test batsman of this generation, and his numbers speak volumes. In the 102 Tests he has played, he has managed to score 9320 runs at an average of 58.40. Meanwhile, 2023 has been a bit of a struggle for the Aussie. In the six Tests he has played, he has only scored 528 runs at an average of 44. Just two tons have come his way in 2023.
