No retention, but LSG tempted by Right to Match option for KL Rahul in IPL 2025 auction

IPL 2025 Mega Auction: Strike rate major issue in retention of KL Rahul! LSG tempted to keep captain under Right to Match option

The KL Rahul saga continues. As per recent reports Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) might not retain KL Rahul. But on the flip side, the team maybe willing to use the ‘right to match option’ for their current skipper. Recent reports claim KL Rahul is on his way out and most likely to rejoin Royal Challengers Bengaluru for IPL 2025.

After managing to reach the knockouts in IPL 2022 and 2023, LSG underwent a downfall. The team finished at 7th in IPL 2024 and is gearing to make some key changes in their side.

The primary change involves the release of the captain, KL Rahul. “LSG won’t retain Rahul because of technical reasons. His strike rate is main concern. But they may exercise right to match option to keep him depending on option available in the auction” a source tracking the news told News9 Sports.

LSG to match Right to Option for KL Rahul?

While the strike rate issue persists with KL Rahul, Lucknow Super Giants are now keen to bring in players who are hard hitters. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that it is the end of road for KL Rahul and LSG. If the Right to Option comes into play, in IPL 2025 mega auction, the the Lucknow outfits would want to match the amount and rope in their skipper.

“At the mega auction, they would be looking to buy players who have impressive strike rates and are capable of explosive knocks that often shape the course of T20 matches,” the source said.

It remains to be seen as to what happens next. The BCCI is slated to meet with the IP franchise owners and discuss on the number of players that will be retained. Furthermore, whether the Right to Match option will be brought into account will also be discussed. Last time in the IPL 2022 Mega auction the RTM wasn’t used.

In the mean time, KL Rahul got his Team India callup for the IND vs SL ODI series. KL Rahul is not slotted in T20Is and also wasn’t a part of the T20 World Cup squad that won the title in Barbados.
