No place in India squad for World Cup, Yuzvendra Chahal set to join County Cricket

Yuzvendra Chahal is set to exploit his trade in County Cricket after World Cup 2023 snub

County cricket has been the main go-to place for cricketers to revive their international careers. Following the likes of Chetweshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane, Yuzvendra Chahal is now headed to England for his maiden County Cricket stint with Kent. The veteran leggie was not picked by Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid for the 15-man India Squad for World Cup.

As per reports from the Times of India, Yuzvendra Chahal has decided to play for Kent in County Cricket. “The Kent County Cricket Club will make an official announcement regarding this development soon. Chahal will play three four-day games for them. The BCCI has granted NOC to him to play County cricket. Should he be a requirement for the India team, Chahal will join the national squad immediately,” a source in the BCCI informed The Times of India.

After serving an exile for almost a year, both in ODIs and T20Is Chahal returned to white-ball cricket for the Men in Blue in 2023. With him no longer being the preferred choice in India Playing XI, Chahal squandered his chance to please the BCCI Selection Committee. In his last tour of West Indies, a month back, Chahal despite being picked failed to produce good returns with the ball after being hit all over the park by the Caribbean batters.

This trip to West Indies, proved to be the final nail in the coffin for Chahal. The 33-year-old featured in just 2 ODI matches for India in 2023 thereby showcasing that the selectors have decided to do away with him. While there were little hopes of his return, that too was diminished when India announced the World Cup squad on 5th September.

“Naturally, it is very disappointing to miss out any selection for India. As a cricketer we must accept that some things don’t always go our way. I must continue to try my best and hopefully my performances will justify selection again for India,” Yuzvendra Chahal told The Times of India.

But now there is no looking back at the past. Chahal is ready for the next challenge that lies ahead of him and is ready to light up County Cricket. “Rahul Dravid Sir speaks so highly of his time in County cricket. I really wanted to play (in County cricket). I cannot explain how grateful I am of my good friend Brindon who helped me in such short notice,” Chahal concluded.
