No place for Sanju Samson, Jaiswal & Gaikwad set for cover for Shubman Gill in World Cup

No place for Sanju Samson, Jaiswal & Gaikwad set for cover for Shubman Gill in World Cup

Gill is likely to miss IND vs PAK which is scheduled to be played in Ahmedabad on Saturday, October 14.

Indian opener Shubman Gill is currently receiving treatment in Chennai after doctors diagnosed him with dengue ahead of the World Cup. According to reports, Gill is likely to miss the IND vs PAK match, scheduled to be played in Ahmedabad on Saturday, October 14. The Indian Express has reported that the selection committee is likely to add either Yashasvi Jaiswal or Ruturaj Gaikwad as cover for Gill.

The BCCI had already released a statement on Gill’s health saying that the 24-year-old did not travel with the team to Delhi for IND vs AFG match. He was later hospitalized in Chennai due to a dip in his platelet count but was discharged on Monday evening. The Indian opener is expected to take at least one week to recover and is likely to be available for the IND vs BAN match on October 19.

No Sanju Samson in reserves

Insidesport

Many fans were hoping to see Sanju Samson as travelling reserve in Indian squad for World Cup. However, the wicketkeeper batter is not in contention. If the team management decide to get a cover for Shubman Gill, the selection committee is likely to pick between Ruturaj Gaikwad or Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Sanju Samson is currently with Kerala squad and will lead the side in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 tournament to be held at Mohali from October 11.

Notably, Gill’s absence will be a big blow for Team India. The Indian opener has been in imperious form this year. Ishan Kishan struggled as opener in IND vs AUS and was dismissed on golden duck. With the quality of bowlers Pakistan have, the team management will surely miss Gill’s presence in the XI.

India’s 2023 World Cup Squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Ishan Kishan (wk), Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami.
