No moving on for Pakistan! PCB to challenge ICC over controversial Rizwan dismissal

Expressing dissatisfaction with the decision, the PCB has decided to escalate the matter to the ICC.

In the aftermath of a contentious decision that affected the outcome of the second Test against Australia, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken a bold stance, opting to approach the International Cricket Council (ICC) to address concerns related to umpiring decisions and the use of technology in the game.

The controversy unfolded when Mohammad Rizwan, the Pakistani wicketkeeper-batter, found himself at the center of a disputed dismissal during the second Test. Despite the on-field umpire initially denying Australia’s appeal for a caught behind, the decision was overturned through the Decision Review System (DRS), leading to Rizwan’s dismissal.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the reversal, the PCB has decided to escalate the matter to the ICC as per PTI. Zaka Ashraf, the head of the PCB, engaged in discussions with team director Mohammed Hafeez, who conveyed concerns about the umpiring decisions and the utilization of technology during the Melbourne Test, which ultimately ended in a 79-run defeat for Pakistan.

The upcoming dialogue with the ICC is expected to encompass the rules and regulations governing cricket, as well as the protocols governing the implementation of technology on the field. All such regulations are subject to approval by the ICC Executive Board, following scrutiny by the MCC Cricket Committee and ICC Cricket Committee.

Hafeez, visibly perturbed during the post-match press conference at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, emphasized the need to draw attention to inconsistent umpiring decisions and the challenges posed by technology, which had a direct impact on the Test’s outcome.

Addressing the broader issue, Hafeez stated, “If you look at the entire game, there were very inconsistent decisions by the umpires. We play this beautiful game of cricket with natural instinct, and we all know the basics of the game. However, at times, it feels like the focus is more on technology than on the actual cricket being played. I believe this is an area that needs to be addressed.”

The former cricketer highlighted the importance of clarity and certainty in the sport. “I am not against technology in the game. But if it brings doubt and confusion, it is not acceptable. Some decisions were not understandable. The ball hitting the stumps is always out. I will never understand why there is an umpire’s call,” Hafeez remarked, reiterating the need for conclusive evidence to overturn on-field decisions.

As the PCB prepares to engage with the ICC on these contentious matters, the conversation around the role of technology and the consistency of umpiring decisions in international cricket is set to gain prominence.
