No more tobacco ads in stadiums? Union Health Ministry mulls banning surrogate ads in venues

As per a report, the Union Health Ministry is likely to ask BCCI to stop showing advertisements related to tobacco products in stadiums

The Union Health Ministry is planning to ask the BCCI to stop showing advertisements via hoardings that endorse smokeless tobacco products at stadiums across the country. As per Live Mint, a study conducted by ICMR and Vital Strategies stated that as much as 41.3% of all surrogate ads of smokeless tobacco (SLT) brands in 2023 were displayed during the last 17 matches of the World Cup.

BCCI to be asked to stop showing tobacco ads in stadiums

The report states that the Union Health Ministry is likely to ask the BCCI to stop showing surrogate ads which feature various Indian celebrities endorsing smokeless tobacco products in the name of ‘elaichi’.

Cricket matches widely popular among young population. There have been multiple instances wherein surrogate smokeless tobacco ads are being displayed during cricket matches and celebrity endorsement happening. This tends to indirectly attract the youths. The health ministry’s DGHS may communicate to the BCCI urging them to stop showing tobacco related ads in any form,” said an official aware of the matter requesting anonymity, as per Live Mint.
