No Mohammed Shami for BGT? Ace pacer likely to fail to get clearance, set to stay with Bengal

Since his return Mohammed Shami has played 7 SMAT matches where he has scalped 8 wickets

The India Cricket Team has been handed a major blow. Ace pacer Mohammed Shami hasn’t yet got his clearance certificate from the National Cricket Academy (NCA). And thus Shami isn’t likely to fly to Australia now to be a part of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. In the meantime, Shami is set to remain with the Bengal Team and continue in the latter stages of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT).

Mohammed Shami has been under the guidance of the BCCI Medical Team ever since his comeback into domestic cricket. He played a Ranji Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh and then continued to play 7 SMAT matches where he has already scalped 8 wickets.

When can Shami travel to Australia?

The BCCI think tank made it clear that Shami had to reduce his weight and attain 100% match fitness to play an international game. But that is not the case. The NCA believes that Shami isn’t fit yet and thus hasn’t given him the clearance to join the India camp.

It was believed that Shami would travel to Down Under soon and join the team ahead of the IND vs AUS 3rd Test match. But that doesn’t seem to be the case now. As things stand, if Shami attains 100% fitness he can be available for the Fifth Test match, i.e. the Sydney Test. But things can take a turn and he can be a part of the Boxing Day Test if he gets his clearance soon.

“The selection committee is waiting for the NCA’s fitness clearance report on Shami. He travelled to Bengaluru to give a fitness test. He played the Ranji Trophy as well as the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20s, where he looked good. His kit is also ready. We are just waiting for the approval from the NCA,” a BCCI official told The Indian Express.
