“No mere participation”: Mumbai selector’s indirect jibe at Rohit, expects SKY & Dube to step up in Ranji Trophy

Mumbai selector Sanjay Patil urged Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube to deliver big, hinting at past failures where mere participation wasn’t enough.

Mumbai’s chief selector, Sanjay Patil wants India cricketers Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube to follow in the footsteps of legends like Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, and others by helping Mumbai achieve a big win over Haryana in the upcoming Ranji Trophy quarter-final in Kolkata. Suryakumar, who recently led India to a T20 series victory against England, and all-rounder Dube are included in Mumbai’s 18-member team for the match at Eden Gardens starting February 8.

Suryakumar and Shivam Dube need to step up

Patil emphasised the need for Yadav and Dube to not just participate but also make significant contributions, saying, “Surya and Shivam’s mere participation in this quarter-final game is not required. They should shoulder the responsibility and be a part of a big victory over our opponents. Whenever big stars like Gavaskar, Tendulkar, Vengsarkar, Shastri and Manjrekar played for Mumbai, they always helped us clinch a big victory in the Ranji Trophy. I expect these India players to carry forward that legacy.” Patil wants them to emulate past Mumbai stars in leading the team to success.

Genuine efforts needed from SKY and Shivam Dube

Reflecting on a past defeat to Jammu & Kashmir despite having several India players, Patil said, “Considering the big defeat to Jammu & Kashmir despite six India players representing Mumbai, we lost big-time due to mere participation… I expect Surya and Shivam to come up with extraordinary efforts. I want them to realise the importance of their place in the Mumbai team for this crucial game.” Patil, a former Mumbai left-arm spinner, was part of the team that narrowly lost to Haryana in the 1990-91 Ranji Trophy final and understands the importance of meaningful contributions in crucial matches.

Patil taking dig at Rohit Sharma?

Patil said that we lost against J&K due to mere participation. India’s captain Rohit Sharma also took part in that match but failed to capitalise. He has only played one match and later didn’t feature in the match against Meghalaya. Most of the Indian stars like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Mohammed Siraj only played one match in the Raji Trophy during the break.
