No JSW, No Sourav Ganguly at Delhi Capitals: Ex-BCCI President “out of DC IPL team”

No JSW, No Sourav Ganguly at Delhi Capitals: Ex-BCCI President “out of DC IPL team”

With GMR taking over operations at Delhi Capitals from JSW, Sourav Ganguly is on his way out ahead of IPL 2025 Auction.

Sourav Ganguly is likely to end his stint at Delhi Capitals ahead of the IPL 2025 Auction. After ending his BCCI stint as the President, the former India captain returned to the role of Director of Cricket at Delhi Capitals in 2023. However, as performance slumped, DC chose to overhaul the entire backroom staff including Ganguly as per reports. The development takes place after JSW moves away from DC operations with GMR taking over the charge in IPL.

“Sourav Ganguly will no longer be participating in working and functioning of the Delhi Capitals in the IPL. You can say he will be the Women’s Director of Cricket. He will mostly be overseeing the Women’s Premier League team and the Pretoria Capitals in SA20,” Times of India quoted a source as saying.

What’s next for Sourav Ganguly?

After a long time, Sourav Ganguly won’t be associated with IPL in any capacity. Instead, he will be in charge of the Delhi Capitals Women’s team in the Women’s Premier League. He will also oversee Pretoria Capitals in SA20 in South Africa.

However, Sourav Ganguly is free to join any franchises in the IPL 2025. Ganguly will return to Delhi Capitals in IPL 2027 after JSW takes charge of the men’s team operations.

“Dada has always had a special place at JSW Sports. For us, he is family first and then the cricketing icon that he is. I’ve said this in the past and it stands true even today – he is one of the sharpest brains in cricket and we will always stand to benefit from his guidance and wisdom of the sport. I am both humbled and delighted that Dada will now head all things cricket for JSW Sports in his role as Director,” Parth Jindal, Director of JSW Sports, said in an official statement.

With the Delhi Capitals under pressure, Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly got into a verbal altercation with the umpire in the RR vs DC match.

GMR behind Ganguly’s ouster from IPL?

On Thursday morning, Delhi Capitals announced that GMR will take over operations of DC for two years in IPL on a rotational basis. JSW who are the co-owners will be in charge of the Delhi Capitals Women’s team as well as Pretoria Capitals in SA20.

“Key decisions like auctions, captaincy, player release and retentions of both teams will be made by the Delhi Capitals’ board, and will be decided mutually by the senior leadership of both groups,” the statement from DC read.

Parth Jindal, who is the director of JSW Sports, has a close relation with Sourav Ganguly. But now that GMR will be the decision-maker in the IPL team, Ganguly is no longer in the plans. Instead, Venugopal Rao will be the new Director of Cricket.

Delhi Capitals also parted ways with Ricky Ponting after seven seasons. Under Ponting’s coaching, DC reached the IPL final. However, with performance dwindling in the last two seasons, DC parted ways with Ponting, who joined Punjab Kings as the new head coach.

With Ponting and Ganguly gone, DC will overhaul the entire coaching staff. Hemang Badani is likely to be the new head coach with Munaf Patel coming in as the new bowling coach.
