No Hardik, Surya, Rinku or Jaiswal in India’s T20 World Cup squad based on IPL 2024 performances

So far, big names like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, Shubman Gill, Mohammed Siraj, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya haven't played to their potential.

34 days are done and dusted. Now, we are at the business end of the IPL 2024 season. Incredible catches, last-ball finishes, epic hundreds & bowling spells, and 500+ runs scored in a match—we’ve seen it all. However, one mustn’t forget the bigger picture. 5 days after the 17th edition of the IPL is over, the T20 World Cup 2024 will begin.

Given the magnitude of the event, it’s imperative that the India cricket team send their strongest possible. So, let’s see how the probable squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 shapes up, keeping IPL performances and form in mind.

Probable T20 World Cup 2024 squad (after 30 matches of IPL 2024)

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Riyan Parag, Shivam Dube, Rishabh Pant (wk), Dinesh Karthik (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, T Natarajan, Harshit Rana.

Top Order

So far, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Abhishek Sharma, and Sanju Samson have been the best top-order batters in the IPL 2024. Kohli currently holds the orange cap, has two fifties and one hundred, averages 63.16, and is striking at 150.39. Rohit has 303 runs at a rapid strike rate of 162.90. Stylish left-hander Abhishek has scored just one fifty but is striking at 215.96, while Samson has a healthy average (62.8) and strike rate (152.42) as well.

Middle/lower middle-order

Riyan Parag, Shivam Dube, Rishabh Pant, and Dinesh Karthik have impressed with their striking and match-finishing abilities. Dube, Parag, Pant, and Karthik have all scored fifties and have some of the best strike rates in the middle and death overs. Parag is currently striking at 161.42, Dube at 169.94, Pant at 161.32, and Karthik at 196.09.

All-rounders

Ravindra Jadeja and Shivam Dube will be the two main all-rounder options. However, Abhishek and Parag can also roll their arms over. Jadeja currently has just 4 wickets but is averaging 78.5 with the bat and striking at 131.93. Primarily seen as a defensive bowler, the left-arm CSK spinner has an economy of 7.85 and also has a 3-fer to his name. Parag and Abhishek have bowled as well but haven’t been successful so far, while Dube’s service with the ball hasn’t been needed by CSK.

Bowlers

Six out-and-out bowlers have emerged so far. Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav are the main spinners, while Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, and T Natarajan are the pace bowling options. Nothing needs to be said about Bumrah and his ability to bowl in every phase of the game.

Arshdeep is a great new ball bowler and offers a left-handed advantage. Rana can be used as a middle-overs enforcer and in the powerplay, depending on the situation, while Natarajan is primarily a death specialist who can bowl in the middle-overs as well.

Four of the six bowlers mentioned above are among the top 10 wicket-takers of the season. Rana has played 6 games so far, while Arshdeep hasn’t been at his best but will still find himself in India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2024.
