The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) hasn’t started their preparations for the T20 World Cup 2026, but the Eden Gardens has been confirmed as one of the venues. Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) President Snehasish Ganguly has revealed that they will start the renovations for the ICC event soon.
The CAB plans to increase its current stadium capacity of 68,000 to 90,000 by the time the T20 World Cup starts in February. Eden Gardens is the oldest cricket ground in India and is often called the ‘home of Indian cricket’.
Eden Gardens getting ready for T20 World Cup 2026
The BCCI has also paid Kolkata its dues. In the last T20 World Cup that was played in India, 2016, Eden Gardens was the venue for five matches, which included the electric India vs Pakistan clash and the final between England and the West Indies. In the ODI World Cup 2023 as well, Eden hosted five matches, including the semifinal between South Africa and Australia.
“We have got some plans, but we will be waiting for the lease agreement to be renewed. So, once that agreement is renewed, then we will make the plans for renovation. But the design is almost ready,” the CAB President told RevSportz.
The CAB wishes to host the 2026 T20 World Cup Final like they did a decade ago. Will that be possible? One can’t be sure. Given the BCCI are co-hosts with Sri Lanka, the final could be played in either country. But if it’s played in India, there might be a chance that Narendra Modi Stadium, which is the biggest cricket ground in the world, will be picked over Eden Gardens.
