No Champions Trophy return for David Warner, confirms team selector George Bailey

David Warner was a key member of Australia's victorious squads at the 2015 Cricket World Cup and the 2021 T20 World Cup.

Australia’s cricket team is looking ahead with new call-ups and a confirmed retirement. Australia’s team selector, George Bailey, announced that David Warner would not be playing in the 2025 Champions Trophy.

This clarification from Bailey came after Warner’s social media post hinting at availability for the 2025 Champions Trophy as his farewell tournament.  David Warner has officially retired from all three formats after the conclusion of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Warner’s stellar career ends

Bailey praised Warner’s amazing career across all formats and confirmed his retirement is final. He said, “Our understanding is that David is retired, and [he] should be commended on an incredible career across all three formats. Certainly, our plan is that he won’t be there in Pakistan.”

Maxwell and Starc are considered for the 2026 T20 World Cup

According to Bailey, while the squad sees some changes, experienced players like Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell are still in the mix for the 2026 T20 World Cup. They’ll be playing in the upcoming Champions Trophy as well.

Opportunities for new players

The recent shakeup created opportunities. Newcomers Cooper Connolly and Jake Fraser-McGurk may take up Warner’s place in the T20I squad for the tours of Scotland and England. Matthew Wade’s exclusion suggests he might not play for Australia again, but it’s not official yet.

Bailey said, “I still think that the T20 side, the foundation of it, is a good team. It didn’t feel like we needed to completely rip it apart and start from scratch. But it’s also a great opportunity to start to explore some other guys.”

Marsh Stays Captain

Mitchell Marsh will continue leading both squads on the upcoming UK tour as Pat Cummins focuses on conditioning for the home season.
