West Indies batter Nicolas Pooran on Tuesday scripted history when he hit Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai for 36 runs in an over at the Daren Sammy Stadium in Gros Islet. This was only the fifth instance of 36 runs being scored in an over in the history of T20 cricket.
Runs galore as Pooran wreaks havoc
Afghanistan’s Azmatullah Omarzai bowled a no-ball and there were five wides and four leg byes. It helped Pooran, who amassed 26 runs with the bat.
A full and wide delivery from Omarzai opened the over. Pooran hit the ball for a six over the third man. With the next ball, the right-arm pacer overstepped and was hit for four.

Omarzai’s over moves from bad to worse
When Omarzai’s next ball went for five wides, his over took a turn for the worse. The attempted bouncer flew over the keeper’s head. Omarzai did not get any relief as the free-hit persisted. But Pooran was unable to take advantage of it.
Afghanistan’s luck did not hold as the third valid delivery of the over beat the keeper and clipped Pooran’s pads, leading to four leg byes. In the final three balls of the over, Pooran hit Omarzai for two sixes and a four, adding to the suffering of the Afghans and making his name in history.
