With the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 just around the corner, cricket boards are unveiling their team jerseys, drumming up excitement for the marquee tournament. New Zealand Cricket (NZC) caused a stir on Monday by revealing their kit, and it’s sure to spark conversation, especially among fans who grew up in the 90s.
Nostalgic Nod to 1999 World Cup Jersey
The New Zealand T20 World Cup jersey takes inspiration from the team’s 1999 kit, a design that has become a source of debate amongst fans. While some cherish its bold, electric blue color and prominent silver ferns as a symbol of 90s nostalgia, others find it somewhat garish.
Notably in 1999, the Kiwis opted against the grey they’d run with in 1992 and 1996 to go with an outrageous electric blue. The national ‘silver fern’ appears not-so-subtly in that jersey, emblazoned on the chest five times, as well as being stamped on the hat and trousers.
NZC Opts for Retro-Modern Fusion
NZC hasn’t gone all-out with a complete replica. The 2024 jersey features a white base with turquoise accents, a modern twist on the 1999 design. “New Zealand” is prominently displayed across the chest, adding a contemporary touch.

Social Media Divided: Love It or Hate It?
The New Zealand Cricket team, including players like Ish Sodhi, Michael Bracewell, Tim Southee, Mark Chapman, and Jimmy Neesham, modeled the jersey in the official launch photos. NZC shared the pictures on their social media handles, and the response has been mixed.
