It is an interesting decision that the management has taken with the T20 World Cup starting from October 16. New Zealand open their World Cup campaign against Australia on October 22, and there is 12 days for that.

However, Stead is aware that making Mitchell available for the first game might not be possible. They are looking to field him from the second game, which is on October 26 against Afghanistan.

“The good news is we have made a decision about Daryl Mitchell and he will tour with us to the World Cup. When we thought about the value Daryl brings to the team and the likely time frame, we are still hopeful he will be right for the first game but probably more realistically the second game,” Stead said.

“There will still be four pool games to go and then hopefully semi-final and final after that. Daryl has showed the value to this team and we feel it was the right decision to make.”

With the decision already made about taking him, it just shows the faith Stead and co has in his ability. Mitchell is looked upon as an important member of the New Zealand unit in the shorter format especially.

He has delivered for the Black Caps with the bat in his international T20 career, scoring 657 runs at a strike rate of 141.59. The player is known to play the big shots and New Zealand will expect to see him doing the same after he recovers from his injury.
