Pakistan captain Shaheen Afridi did not have an ideal start to his leadership stint as Pakistan lost the PAK vs NZ 1st T20I by 46 runs. Shaheen, leading Pakistan for the first time, stressed on the importance of improving his team’s catching after the match.
The visitors won the toss and chose to field first. New Zealand posted a big total of 226 on board with Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell both scoring quickfire half-centuries. Mitchell top-scored with 61 of 27 balls while Williamson anchored the innings with a patient 57 of 42 balls.
In reply, Pakistan had a strong start but gradually lost momentum as the match progressed. Former Pakistan captain Babar Azam top-scored for his side with a half-century but it wasn’t enough as the Black Caps won the match by 46 runs comfortably in the end.
Speaking after the match, Shaheen Afridi spoke about improving on the field.
“Improving our catching is essential, and that’s an area we’ll focus on. Ayub’s solid performance and Abbas’s impressive debut are positive aspects. Moving forward, precision and utilizing variations will be crucial for our success,” Afridi said.
He also expressed his happiness on being able to lead the Pakistan side.
“It’s a moment of pride to captain the team, and it’s an honour for any player to lead their country. Our performance was commendable, and we aim to continue giving our best in the upcoming games. Both Williamson and Mitchell displayed outstanding skills,” Afridi added.
