New India Captain: IND vs AUS: Rohit Sharma – While the Board of Control for Cricket for India (BCCI) is likely to hand Hardik Pandya T20 Captaincy in some time, Sunil Gavaskar feels Pandya should also be handed over the captaincy in 50 over format. Rohit Sharma is tipped to lead India during the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2023, and Hardik will likely be his deputy. However, Gavaskar feels if the Gujarat Titans skipper manages to win the first ODI against Australia in Mumbai, then he should be stamped as India captain once the 50-over World Cup is done. Follow IND vs AUS Live Updates with InsideSport.IN.

  • Rohit Sharma will miss the first ODI against Australia due to family commitments.
  • Pandya will lead the side in the first ODI in Mumbai.
  • Gavaskar believes Pandya is ready to lead in 50 over format as well.

“He has been an impressive captain. I have been very impressed with his captaincy at the T20 level for the Gujarat Titans and for India when he is captaining the T20 side. I do believe that if he wins the first game in Mumbai, then you can almost stamp him as the India captain once the World Cup is over in 2023,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports Game Plan

India New Captain: Gavaskar mighty impressed with Pandya’s leadership skills, says the all-rounder leads from the front

Gavaskar has been a fan of Pandya’s captaincy ever since he led Gujarat Titans to victory in IPL 2023 season. The legendary cricketer feels the all-rounder takes more responsibility as a captain and shares a great camaraderie with players. Not only for the Titans, but Pandya has also led India well in T20Is by being calm and composed. The former India cricketer opines that it is just a matter of time before Pandya will be white-ball captain permanently.

“What you see with Hardik Pandya as a captain is a sense of comfort with the rest of the team. Maybe, it’s the way he handles the players, puts his arm around the players… He just seems to give the players a sense of comfort. That’s so important to give a player a sense of comfort so that he can go and play his natural game. I think he encourages them, which is a wonderful sign.”

  • The all-rounder also backed players to the hilt in the IPL despite few failures.
  • Gavaskar believes Pandya puts himself ahead of the team always in pressure situations and that is great quality as a leader.
  • Pandya has also led India in four T20 series and is yet to lose a series yet.
