India cricket team skipper Rohit Sharma was seemingly miffed with Rishabh Pant over his shot selection that led to his dismissals in IND vs AUS 4th Test. The southpaw came under fire for his poor shot selection in both the 1st and 2nd innings, triggering crisis for the middle-order at much-needed situations. The Hitman fired a warning for Pant, stating that he needed to understand what was required from him.
Rohit Sharma’s warning for Rishabh Pant
Speaking at the press conference after India’s defeat in Melbourne, Rohit stated that it was difficult for the captain to offer any advice for Pant in terms of changing his approach. He pointed out that the southpaw’s technique had offered success to the team in the past but categorically stated that he needs to understand what the team needs from him. However, Sharma backed Pant, noting that his approach gave the team positive results.
“Rishabh (Pant) needs to understand what’s required off himself. In past he has given us a lot of success doing what he does. As captain it’s mixed because you want to back but when it comes off it looks good but when it doesn’t then it’s worse. It’s hard to have a conversation when that method gives him success,” Rohit Sharma said.

Pant threw his wicket away in an alarming fashion in both the innings. In the 1st innings, he played a ridicoulous shot off Scott Boland that saw the fielder at deep third man take a catch to end his stint at the crease. The shot drew criticism from all quarters, with former Indian cricketer Gavaskar leading the charge with his ‘stupid, stupid, stupid’ rant. Similarly, in the 2nd innings, the southpaw faltered right after Tea and ended up losing his wicket when he looked well settled.
After playing 100 balls easily, Rishabh threw his wicket away while attempting a big shot off Travis Head. On the 4th delivery of 59th over, Pant misjudged a fractionally short ball, thinking it was suitable for a pull shot. However, he failed to get under the ball properly and mistimed his shot. The ball flew wide of long-on, where Mitchell Marsh ran to his left and completed a well-judged reverse-cupped catch, even as he hit the ground.
