The National Cricket Academy (NCA) has come under fire from former India opener Gautam Gambhir for clearing middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer. He further questioned the selection of Shreyas Iyer for the ODI World Cup 2023 team.
Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has criticized the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for clearing middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer and choosing him for the ODI World Cup team.
Shreyas Iyer has been sidelined since March due to a stress fracture in his lower back. He was unable to play in the West Indies tour, the WTC Final, or the entire IPL 2023 because of the injury, which necessitated surgery.
After undergoing a brief period of rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, Iyer participated in practice games and match simulations to demonstrate his level of fitness.
He did, however, report having a back spasm prior to the Super Four match against Pakistan last week, and he has been sitting on the sidelines ever since.
Gautam Gambhir lashes Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer should be removed in the World Cup squad, according to former India opener Gautam Gambhir, who wasn’t too pleased with how the latter was treated after failing to demonstrate his fitness at the Asia Cup.
“It is a concern. You were out for such a lengthy time and then you return for the Asia Cup, play one match and then again become unfit. I don’t think after this team management will pick up him for such a big tournament. You will see in the coming days that Iyer won’t be part of the World Cup squad and someone will be replacing him. You should always go into a World Cup with fit players. Performance is a different thing,” Gambhir told Star Sports.
“Imagine if a player suffers from a spasm or some other thing then you cannot find a replacement. So if Shreyas Iyer hasn’t been fit in this tournament then it is very difficult for him to be part of the World Cup because of his injury and then we don’t even know how his form is presently. Whatever his form was, it was 7-8 months back after which he only played in one game. So it is unfortunate,” he added.
Gambhir added that the administration of the squad should inquire about Iyer’s recurring back injuries with the NCA.
“If questions are to be raised then ask the NCA because that is where he was all these months and then got a clearance from there as well. Who knows maybe they cleared him too quickly?”
