Vidarbha would need to pull off an extraordinary batting performance in the fourth innings to win the Ranji Trophy 2024. Mumbai started the day with intensity, knowing that a good lead in the first innings could set them up for another famous win.
Vidarbha were reeling at 31/3 at the end of Day 1 and kept losing wickets at the start of Day 2. Vidarbha were finally all out 105, making their jobs tougher.
Mumbai produced a collective bowling effort with Dhawal Kulkarni, Shams Mulani and Tanush Kotian picking up three wickets each. Mumbai, having got the first innings lead, needed a good batting performance in the second innings to put the game beyond Vidarbha’s reach.
They did just that in the second innings. Although Mumbai lost both openers early, Musheer Khan and Ajinkya Rahane both scored half-centuries as Mumbai piled on a huge lead to add to Vidarbha’s misery. At the end of Day 2, Musheer Khan was batting at 51, while captain Ajinkya Rahane was batting at 58 as the Mumbai lead stretched to 260 runs.
