Abhimanyu Easwaran shows why he’s India’s 3-best Test opener, headlines Irani Cup Day 3 with marathon knock

Abhimanyu Easwaran has scored 732 runs at an immaculate average of 146.4 in his last 8 first-class innings.

For the third day of running, the Irani Cup 2024 saw less than 90 overs, as Day 3 only had 77 overs. However, the day belonged to one and only Abhimanyu Easwaran. Easwaran continued his dominant form, showcasing why he’s a strong contender for India’s third-choice Test opener spot. On Day 3 of the match against Mumbai, Easwaran’s marathon knock of 154 runs helped the Rest of India (ROI) stage a comeback in reply to Mumbai’s mammoth first-innings total of 537.

Abhimanyu Easwaran stands tall!

Despite Mumbai’s early breakthroughs, Easwaran remained composed and anchored the ROI innings with his patient and technically sound batting. He was particularly impressive against the second new ball, showcasing his ability to adapt to different bowling conditions. This was also his fourth century this year. This just goes to show how consistent and lethal the Bengal batter is in the Indian domestic circuit.

While Ruturaj Gaikwad, the ROI captain, failed to capitalize on his opportunity, Easwaran’s performance has once again highlighted his credentials for a national call-up. While there were reports of Gaikwad being considered as a backup opener for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy later this year, Easwaran’s performances in the Duleep Trophy and the Irani Cup have made a strong case for his inclusion in India’s Test squad.

With Easwaran’s impressive form and the uncertainty surrounding India’s opening combination, the battle for the third Test opener spot is set to intensify. Only time will tell if Easwaran’s consistent performances will finally earn him a well-deserved India cap.
