Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians crashed out of the IPL 2023 following a limp defeat to the Gujarat Titans on Friday. The five-time champions haven’t lifted the title in three years and a rebuild is on the cards. While Rohit Sharma has led the side well, his future appears bleak given his IPL form over the last few years. The Hit-Man is currently 36 and the Mumbai Indians could very well look at grooming a future captain in their ranks. Follow Indian Premier League LIVE Updates on Insidesport.IN
Rohit Sharma had a year to forget with bat in hand as Mumbai Indians crashed out of the IPL 2023 playoffs. The MI skipper scored 332 runs this season at an awful average of 20.75. His strike rate of 132.80 was also less impressive considering his side plays half their games on a run-laden Wankhede. In fact, Rohit has failed to cross the 400-run mark in each of his last four seasons. In the past seven seasons, there has only been one instance of the Hit-Man scoring above 400 in a season.

While Rohit has guided Mumbai Indians to five titles, there has been a slump in the franchise’s performances in the past three years. His own personal form has been a huge letdown and the team management will consider all possible options available to them. At 35, Rohit isn’t getting any younger and with the mega auction in IPL 2025, it would be a good time to groom the next captain.
Rohit took over the reins from Ricky Ponting in 2013 and has led the franchise for the last decade. Suryakumar Yadav is now his deputy and seems the next in line should MI decide to pass the baton. Surya in fact did lead the side in a game where Rohit featured as an impact sub due to a stomach bug. He also briefly led the side when Rohit was receiving treatment for an injury on his hand.
Besides Suryakumar, Mumbai Indians do have a lot of options. Jasprit Bumrah, who missed the entire IPL 2023, is another option. The pace spearhead led India in Rohit’s absence in the longest format of the game and could be a viable alternative. Should Mumbai opt for a younger captain, Ishan Kishan could get the opportunity. The left-hander was the captain of the Indian U19 side in 2016.
