Mumbai Indians retention list for IPL 2025: Rohit continues under Hardik’s leadership, Tilak also retained

For MI, the retention of core players like Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, and Jasprit Bumrah, alongside emerging talent Nehal Wadhera, represents a step towards stability and a stronger foundation.

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 auction on the horizon, the Mumbai Indians (MI) have announced their critical retentions on Thursday. After a tough 2024 season where MI finished at the bottom of the standings with just four wins in 14 matches, the franchise is determined to rebuild a great team with a solid core. Leveraging their mix of experienced players and emerging talents, MI’s retention choices could very well shape their comeback.

Mumbai Indians retentions for IPL 2025

Ahead of the IPL 2025 season, MI had six retention slots available (5 capped players maximum, 1 uncapped player minimum), and several players were strong candidates for these coveted spots. Here’s a look at final retentions of Mumbai Indians and why:

Rohit Sharma – Batsman, Former Captain

Rohit Sharma has been instrumental in MI’s past successes, leading the team to multiple IPL titles (5). His presence adds unmatched experience and leadership to the squad, which is crucial as they aim to regain their winning momentum. Retaining Rohit would secure a stabilising force at the top of the order and a trusted mentor for younger players.

Hardik Pandya – All-rounder, Current Captain

Brought back ahead of IPL 2024 and appointed captain, Hardik Pandya had a challenging season with limited runs and wickets. Despite this, MI views him as a long-term asset who could drive the team’s resurgence. His role as captain and all-rounder makes him a valuable choice, even if his 2024 performance was below expectations.

Jasprit Bumrah – Bowler

Jasprit Bumrah remains MI’s primary strike bowler and one of the league’s most feared pacers. His 2024 performance was a highlight for MI, with 20 wickets in 13 games and an impressive economy rate of 6.48. Retaining Bumrah would keep MI’s bowling attack competitive and reliable.

Suryakumar Yadav – India T20I captain

Suryakumar Yadav, the current sensation in T20 cricket, has established himself as a force to be reckoned with. As India’s highest-ranked T20I batter and captain, he brings a wealth of experience and skill to the table. MI, aiming to reclaim their IPL glory, can benefit immensely from his presence.

While his exact retention price is uncertain, we anticipate a significant investment of around Rs 14 crore to secure his services at the pivotal number five position.

Tilak Varma – Rising India star

Mumbai Indians are eyeing a future with Tilak Varma, a young sensation who has consistently impressed in the IPL. Despite the team’s recent underperformance, Varma has been a bright spot, delivering crucial knocks in the middle order.

In just 38 matches for MI, the 21-year-old has amassed a staggering 1156 runs at an incredible strike rate of 146.33. His ability to score quickly and adapt to different match situations has made him a valuable asset to the franchise

Retention costs for core Mumbai Indians players

Mumbai Indians (MI) retentions come with significant costs that reflect their key roles within the squad:

  • Hardik Pandya (All-rounder): INR 16.35 crore
  • Rohit Sharma (Batter: INR 16 crore
  • Jasprit Bumrah (Bowler): INR 18 crore
  • Suryakumar Yadav (Batter): 16.35 INR crore
  • Tilak Varma (Batter): INR 8 crore

These decisions carry a substantial financial commitment but could be pivotal for MI as they rebuild for the future.

Additional Team-Building strategy with RTM options

Mumbai Indians also hold two Right to Match (RTM) options, allowing them to bring back key players like Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan if they go into the auction pool. Both players have previously been critical to MI’s batting line-up, and their return would bolster MI’s middle order and overall balance.

Setting foundation for IPL 2025 comeback

For MI, the retention of core players like Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, and Jasprit Bumrah, alongside emerging talent Nehal Wadhera, represents a step towards stability and a stronger foundation. By combining seasoned players with fresh talent, MI can strategically rebuild to become competitive in IPL 2025.

Their final retention choices will play a crucial role in determining the team’s path forward as they look to overcome a disappointing 2024 season and re-establish themselves as strong contenders in the IPL.
