Afghanistan’s journey in the T20 World Cup has seen a setback with the loss of key spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman due to injury. However, they’ve bolstered their batting lineup with the inclusion of Hazratullah Zazai as a replacement.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman out
The young off-spinner, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, has been a vital cog in Afghanistan‘s T20 setup.
Despite playing just one match in the T20 WC 2024 group stage, his impressive stats speak volumes – 46 T20 internationals with 59 wickets and a miserly economy rate of 6.35. Unfortunately, a finger injury has forced him out of the tournament entirely.
Hazratullah Zazai joins Afghanistan squad
To fill the gap, Afghanistan has opted for an experienced batsman – Hazratullah Zazai. While not a direct replacement for Mujeeb, Zazai’s explosive left-handed batting adds depth to the lineup.
Despite not featuring in a T20I since February, he brings World Cup experience (having played in the last two editions) and holds the record for the second-highest individual score in men’s T20 internationals.
Afghanistan Squad: T20 World Cup 2024
The updated Afghan squad sees Zazai join the likes of skipper Rashid Khan, established batsman Mohammad Nabi, and pace duo Fazalhaq Farooqi and Naveen-ul-Haq. They will look to continue their winning momentum in the Super Eights stage.
Rashid Khan (c), Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Azmatullah Omarzai, Najibullah Zadran, Mohammad Ishaq, Mohammad Nabi, Gulbadin Naib, Karim Janat, Nangyal Kharoti, Noor Ahmad, Naveen-ul-Haq, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Fareed Ahmad Malik, Hazratullah Zazai. Reserves: Sediq Atal, Saleem Safi.
