MS Dhoni to confirm CSK future only on Oct 30, one day before IPL retention: Report

MS Dhoni has been the biggest player for CSK, over the years, without any doubt. But the confusion over his availability might hamper their IPL retention plans.

CSK’s only interest at this point in time remains, whether MS Dhoni will play for them in IPL 2025 or not. And if various reports are to be believed, there is no confirmation still. In fact, as per a latest development, Dhoni will only confirm his availability on October 30, as per Sports Tak.

That is just a day before the IPL Retention list is to be announced by all teams. This development has come after, he was expected to announce his decision on October 28, in a meeting with CSK CEO. It is important to note that, Dhoni this year is eligible to play as an uncapped player, since he retired from international cricket five years back.

It is needless to say, that despite giving up the captaincy in 2024, and handing over the baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad, he remains the most important player for the side, given his influence on his teammates. He is one of the most successful skipper as well, having led the side in 235 matches, winning 142 of those, and losing 90.

His experience has always been valuable for the team, who have won five trophies in the past, the joint-most by any team in the IPL. 2024 was a notable year for the 43-year-old, as in 14 matches, he scored 161 runs, at an average of 73. He ended up smashing 13 sixes, much to the delight of the fans.

CSK Potential Retention

If one was to take MS Dhoni out of the equation for now, then current skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad becomes the first pick for sure. Then the team would want to secure Matheesha Pathirana, followed by Rachin Ravindra and Ravindra Jadeja. One uncapped pick could be Simarjeet Singh.
