Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend MS Dhoni might relinquish some of his captaincy duties during the upcoming IPL 2024 season, according to former teammate Ambati Rayudu.
Ambati Rayudu, who recently retired from cricket and will be commentating for Star Sports during IPL 2024, believes MS Dhoni could utilize the new ‘Impact Player’ rule to share the captaincy load.

The ‘Impact Player’ rule allows teams to bring in a substitute player after the 14th over of each innings. Ambati Rayudu suggests MS Dhoni could use this strategic switch to hand over captaincy duties in the middle overs, potentially grooming a future leader for CSK.

This speculation comes after MS Dhoni successful return to the CSK captaincy role in 2022, following Ravindra Jadeja’s short-lived stint. While Dhoni led CSK to their fifth IPL title last year, his age (42) raises questions about long-term leadership.

Rayudu believes Dhoni remains fully committed to CSK. “Knowing him, injury won’t keep him out,” Rayudu said, highlighting Dhoni’s history of playing through injuries.
He also shed light on Dhoni’s player selection strategies. “He observes the team and keeps a constant group of 12-13 players for the whole season,” Rayudu explained, emphasizing Dhoni’s faith in his chosen players.
Dhoni’s batting position also sparked discussion. Rayudu suggests Dhoni might not promote himself to the top order, potentially giving opportunities to younger players.
