MS Dhoni might hold key to India’s next head coach: Can he convince Stephen Fleming?

MS Dhoni might hold key to India’s next head coach: Can he convince Stephen Fleming?

With the T20 World Cup approaching and the India head coach position still in question, all eyes are on MS Dhoni.

The search for Team India’s next head coach after Rahul Dravid‘s tenure ends with the T20 World Cup has taken an interesting turn as MS Dhoni’s help could be required by BCCI in finalising the big decision. The Indian Board’s preferred candidate, Stephen Fleming, the highly successful coach of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), is hesitant to commit to a long-term contract.

Stephen Fleming juggling act

Stephen Fleming, a decorated cricketer and the longest-serving coach in the Indian Premier League (IPL), is known for his strategic mind and ability to manage players.

However, his current workload includes coaching roles for the Texas Super Kings (USA), Joburg Super Kings (South Africa), and the Southern Brave (England).

This allows him to spend significant time with his family due to the shorter seasons of these leagues. Taking on the Indian head coach position would require a much more demanding schedule, with almost year-round commitments.

BCCI explores options, but Stephen Fleming remains top choice

While the BCCI has approached other coaches like Justin Langer, Gautam Gambhir, and Mahela Jayawardene, their sights remain set on Fleming.

Sources suggest that Fleming hasn’t outright rejected the offer, but expressed concerns about the contract length. The BCCI hopes to replicate their approach with Rahul Dravid, who was eventually persuaded to accept the position.

MS Dhoni: Secret Weapon in Negotiations?

Enter MS Dhoni, the legendary Indian cricketer and former captain of CSK. Dhoni and Fleming have a close relationship built over years of working together at CSK and the Rising Pune Supergiant.

The BCCI believes Dhoni’s influence could be crucial in convincing Fleming to accept the head coach role.

“Fleming hasn’t said no. He has expressed his concerns about the tenure of the contract, which is nothing unusual. Even Rahul Dravid wasn’t keen in the beginning. He was persuaded. It shouldn’t be a surprise if the same thing happens with Fleming. And who better than MS Dhoni to do the job?” a BCCI source quoted to Hindustan Times.

“Opening channels with Dhoni during the IPL was not the right thing to do, but now it may be worth a shot,” the source added.

Why Stephen Fleming? Coach for Transition and Beyond

With senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli nearing the twilight of their careers, the Indian team is poised for a period of transition.

The BCCI believes Stephen Fleming’s experience, tactical acumen, and man-management skills make him the ideal candidate to navigate this period. His success in handling both experienced stars and budding youngsters at CSK is seen as a valuable asset.

MS Dhoni – Stephen Fleming Duo: Recipe for Success?

The Dhoni-Fleming partnership has already yielded five IPL titles for CSK, making them the most successful captain-coach duo in the league’s history.

Fleming also played a key role in the recent leadership transition from Dhoni to Ruturaj Gaikwad at CSK. The BCCI hopes to replicate this successful partnership at the national level.
