In 2014, Dhoni filed a defamation lawsuit alleging that Zee had broadcast false news stories connecting him to the IPL betting scam. He sought Rs 100 crore for the damages and named News Nation, Journalist Sudhir Chaudhary, and IPS officer Sampath Kumar in his lawsuit. At the time, Kumar had led the original inquiry into the scandal, while Dhoni served as the team’s captain for the Chennai Super Kings.

The high court reportedly issued an interim order prohibiting Zee and others from “making defamatory statements,” according to Bar and Bench. Following the submission of Zee and co.’s written declarations to the court, Dhoni filed a new application, claiming that Kumar’s written statement contained further instances of defamation.

The 41-year-old claims that Zee Media’s written statement was generalised and did not contain particular responses. The Madras High Court allowed Dhoni to deliver interrogatories, to Zee Media in July of last year. Zee filed a petition in the high court asking that this permission be set aside. The media outlet reportedly claimed that Dhoni was trying to know evidence against him.

Zee Media’s appeal was rejected in November and so they filed another appeal yesterday in the high court. Zee claimed that the order hadn’t taken into account “unreasonableness” and “vexatiousness,” according to Bar and Bench. On March 13, the matter will be heard further.

In India, betting and gambling are thorny issues, but the BCCI appears to have its own legal theories. One of the new team owners is an international gambling organisation. And winning bids at the IPL bidding event in 2021 ranged from 60 to 250 percent above BCCI’s base price.
